In my dream, I got a part-time job as a stylist at a hair salon. I have no experience in my life of being a hairstylist I cut and color my own hair sometimes, but that is the extent I’ve watched YouTube videos.. I am waking life own a group therapy practice working with children with developmental disabilities and I have done that for 20 years. Who in the dream I was still a therapist but wanted to be a hairstylist very part-time for fun. It was about one or two hours a week, but they hired me and my first client wanted highlights and I was very nervous because I wasn’t really sure how to make sure that the client would be happy with the highlights, considering I’ve only ever watch YouTube videos and colored my own hair a little bit the owner assured that I would be fine. There were a lot of issues that day, though like some flooding and like everyone was running really really behind so the chair wasn’t available for me. And also that note card system with the names that the owner had put together someone had dumped out and so I didn’t even know the name of the client that was coming in to see me and she was so busy that she didn’t remember either and then I had to leave so I was driving back on these like really intense freeways. They were going really high into the sky and I felt really afraid especially because I missed my turn and then I ended up on a toll road that didn’t have an exit for many miles and I wasn’t sure where I was going cause I was driving really high up into the sky. There was a moment where I started driving in the wrong direction and I had a moment of lucidity where I said I don’t want to deal with this in my dream so I want to start driving on the correct side of the road and I did which I thought was kind of amazing and then as I was driving, I kind of forget it was something with my mom and my sister and a baby, but that part was I don’t remember and I remember I got a call from Lola, whose wife coworker in real life and one of our Therapist Natalie was had just put in her two weeks notice which was very surprising and stressful because she was gonna be going to school and had to go work at a different clinic to get her hours so I was stressed cause I was still on the road and when I got there, I was with a different one of our therapist who’s about a decade younger than me I’m 36 and a woman and she is 26 and a woman. We are both lesbians though I was working on a project with her. I guess we were like locating some different materials and looking for something together and these different buildings I think they were therapy materials we were looking for, but she was kind of flirting with me and so I was flirting back, and I was making like some subtle advances and at one point I like hugged her from behind and she kind of froze up and I was like oh is this OK and she was like I’m actually feeling a little uncomfortable and I was like oh my gosh I’m so sorry and I was super apologetic that I had maybe misinterpreted cues or miss overstep because I am technically in a supervisory role even though we try to be very Collaborative I was worried that I have taken advantage and she said it was OK, but I felt very worried and anxious and shameful that I didn’t maintain professional boundaries. This has never happened in real life, but it felt curious that it happened in the dream..
Dreams often serve as a reflection of our subconscious mind, exploring our desires, fears, and unresolved issues. Your dream is rich with symbolism and emotions, reflecting various aspects of your life and your internal world. Here's a detailed interpretation:
Being a Stylist: The part-time job as a hairstylist, despite having little experience, may symbolize a desire for creativity and exploration outside of your usual role. Since your profession involves a great deal of responsibility and emotional work, the dream suggests a longing to express a different, more light-hearted part of yourself. This contrasts with your established identity as a therapist, emphasizing a need for balance and trying something new for personal growth and satisfaction.
Nervousness and Doubt: Your anxiety about doing a good job with the highlights reflects a fear of stepping outside your comfort zone and the uncertainty of trying something unfamiliar. It suggests concerns about competence and the fear of not meeting expectations, perhaps both in your dream role as a stylist and in some aspect of your waking life.
Chaos and Disorganization: The flooding, mixed-up note cards, and generally chaotic setting symbolize challenges and potential feelings of overwhelm in your life. There may be aspects of your environment, either at work or home, that feel out of control or disorganized, causing stress.
Highways and Fear: Dreaming of high and intense freeways, along with feelings of being lost, signifies a journey or direction in life that seems daunting or overwhelming. Missing your turn can symbolize lost opportunities or a fear of heading in the wrong direction. Your lucid moment, where you corrected your path, highlights your ability to take control and change course when necessary.
Professional Concerns: The call about Natalie’s resignation ties back to your real-life worries about staffing and the future of your practice. This part of the dream reflects stress about handling transitions and maintaining stability in your professional life.
Boundary Crossing and Apology: The encounter with your younger colleague shows inner reflections on professional boundaries and the dynamics of power. The anxiety and shame you felt after the interaction emphasize your conscientious nature and concern for maintaining ethical standards, especially in supervisory roles, even if it was just a dream scenario.
Family Element: The vague memory of your mom, sister, and a baby may relate to familial relationships or responsibilities, which you might not be deeply focused on now, considering their vague and less memorable presence in the dream.
Overall, your dream illustrates a negotiation between maintaining control and embracing spontaneity and change. It mirrors your desire to explore new facets of your identity while feeling grounded in your ethical principles, amidst challenges and transitions both at a personal and professional level. The dream also invites reflection on how you handle stress and navigate changes in unexpected situations.
